Twenty years before his death in 1893, Lord Lovelace began planning and building his own mausoleum in the northeast corner of St Martins churchyard. It is embellished with the moulded terracotta brickwork which he used throughout his East Horsley estate.

The mausoleum could be described as a summary of all the intricate details of decoration that he had devised to enhance his other buildings. Inside the vault are two tombs, one for himself and one for his second wife, Jane.
