From the late 17th century fashionable visitors came to drink the waters at Epsom Spa and to build large houses on the outskirts, many of which can still be seen today. At the start of the 20th century a number of mental hospitals were built on the outskirts of Epsom, some for London County Council patients. These have now closed and the sites been redeveloped for housing.
