Gunpowder making

Gunpowder mills at Chilworth were originally established by the East India Company in 1625, on land leased from the lord of the manor of Chilworth.  The Company ceased manufacture in 1635, and the mills were intermittently used by a succession of private owners and partnerships until the establishment of the Chilworth Gunpowder Company Ltd in 1885.
