On 25 November 2010, former Ockenden Venture staff member, Elsie Broughton, visited Woking to take a look at some of the records from the extensive Ockenden archive held at Surrey History Centre. Accompanied by Maggie and John Clough from Haslewey Community Centre, Miss Broughton was able to view photograph albums, scrapbooks and news cuttings dating from her time at Ockenden.
Miss Broughton - known to all as Miss Elsie - worked as a cook and gardener for over 30 years at several Ockenden houses, including Keffolds and Quartermaine in Haslemere. She has recently published a book, 'My Ockenden Adventure', a fascinating recollection of her experiences with the charity. Now in her nineties, Miss Broughton learnt computer skills at the Haslewey Community Centre to write her book, and has since made contact with former colleagues and Ockenden children via Facebook.
