Turnpikes

Turnpike Trusts were set up by Acts of Parliament, with powers to maintain the principal roads and collect tolls from road users. Gates, tollhouses and milestones were also erected. An obelisk with plaques recording distances is in Cranleigh High Street. Turnpike roads in Surrey included the roads from Leatherhead to Kingston, Sutton to Reigate, Leatherhead to Horsham (via Dorking), and Kingston to Sheetbridge (near Petersfield, Hampshire).
