Archaeological Techniques

Nearly all the archaeology which is uncovered in Surrey comes from excavations on sites about to be developed. It is very important to record this as the building work often destroys the archaeology.

All this information gets added to the Historic Environment Record, so it can be used to help build up a picture of the past environment of an area.

Archaeologists use a large number of techniques to help them discover what somewhere was like in the past.

This section tells you more about some of these techniques, that you might see referred to on the pages of Exploring Surrey's Past.
