Desk Based Assessment

A desk based assessment, sometimes abbreviated to DBA, is carried out as part of archaeology in advance of development.

It involves a detailed examination of all known and potential archaeological and historic remains within a specified area. This uses available sources, such as the Historic Environment Record (HER), historic maps, aerial photographs and documentary sources. The study compiles all available information about a site and enables a decision on the potential archaeological value of a site to be reached.
