Scheduled Monument

An archaeological site or structure that is of national importance and hence given a legally protected status. An archaeological monument that is included in the Schedule required to be maintained by the Secretary of State under Section 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. Such monuments are protected by law. The fact that a site is Scheduled does not mean that there is public right of access.
