Families in British India (FIBIS) logoHas anyone ever used the Families in British India (FIBIS) website? This is one of those websites which, if you don’t have families who lived or served in India, would make you wish you had!

First of all (and let’s not discount this) it’s a really easy site to navigate with clear tabs and links. It’s a refreshing change to have a site which is so comfortable to use. Also, in addition to the huge free database of names to search (which include newspaper announcements, cemetery records and so much more) they also have the invaluable Fibiwiki.

Fibiwiki is essential if you have ancestors in India as it not only gives histories and a general background to life for the British in India but also gives a vast array of sources and the opportunity for others to contribute their information and experiences. It also helps with place name changes and guides you through the somewhat tortuous and turbulent border changes which occurred both before and after Independence.

Finally, there is a wonderful gallery of photographs and illustrations including some wonderful railway photographs for any railway buffs out there.
I used this amazing site before visiting India and was so impressed with the information it provided. As I say, even if you don’t have family in British India, have a browse through this lovely site and enjoy!

Happy Researching!
