Oil paintings at Dittons Library

The following oil paintings are included in The Public Catalogue Foundation book “Oil Paintings in Public Ownership in Surrey” (copies are available in various libraries across the county and at Surrey History Centre). Read more about The Public Catalogue Foundation.

    I believe the painting by P. W. J you have as showing Ye Olde Swan is more likely an image of Ember Mills

      Thank you for that. A former library manager identified the location in 2015 as being at the end of Orchard Lane (post code: KT8 0BN). This may well be the location of the Ember Mills you mention, but I believe there were several mills along the Ember. The scene is very little changed from the painting, and the footbridge depicted at the centre of the painting now (still?) carries a public footpath.
