Ring Ditch

Circular features usually seen as a cropmark on aerial photographs. They may be all that remains of various ploughed out circular monuments such as round houses, round barrows, or of modern features such as searchlight emplacements.

Ring ditches are often seen as cropmarks because the ditches have become filled over time.  Many ring ditches are known from aerial photographs in Surrey, especially in the north-west of the county in the areas on the river gravels of the Thames and Colne, such as Staines and Stanwell.  Many of these ring ditches have now disappeared, due to gravel extraction and the construction of the M25.
